Target’s recent data breach makes it the second largest such incident reported by a retailer, according to Reuters. Over the past couple of years other retailers, such as JCPenney, 7-Eleven, Barnes & Noble, and BJ’s Wholesale Club have also been victims of cyber attacks. In Target’s situation, investigators were challenged with identifying whether criminals infiltrated their computer network or credit card service vendors. This incident shows that criminals are adapting to technology and executing sophisticated cyber attacks that challenge businesses to develop more secure software and networks. How are retailers and other companies responding to these types of attacks? Are employers hiring more talent to protect their systems, data, and customers? Below are a list of the companies with the most demand for Cyber Security professionals.

There’s only one company on this list that can be considered a retailer, Hewlett Packard. However, Hewlett Packard also falls under the electronics computer manufacturer and computer and computer peripheral equipment and software merchant wholesalers industries. During the past 30 days, there were about 75 job ads posted online by the retail sector. This accounts for 1% of all cyber security demand. Amazon.com was among the retailers advertising for Cyber Security professionals. Computer systems designs; engineering services; and R&D in the physical, engineering, life sciences industries had the highest number of job ads posted online over the past 30 days for Cyber Security talent. Across all industries, hiring is down 25%. Some companies may already have the talent in place, feel that their systems are not at risk, or that their systems are already safeguarded. It may also be too soon to detect an increase in hiring in reaction to the 2nd largest retail systems breach. Below is a heat map of the volume of hiring for Cyber Security talent throughout the US.
